Robots need high-end apps as humans need high-end food.
Robomow is the first battery powered robotic lawn mower. As lots of our appliances Today, a robotic lawn-mower can benefit greatly from a customized app, so, here we are 🙂

The challenge
When I started working at Robomow in 2014, there was an existing App for the robotic lawn mower.
The App started well, but in time it started receiving moderate to bad reviews. This was mostly because the mobile world moved really fast forward and we (as everybody else) could not be static.
As we improved and updated our products, we had to improve the App. So in 2017 it was decided, we were going to revamp the App.
Overall, the challenge was to bring the Robomow App to the adequate decade, going from something basic and old-fashioned to something more interactive, that speaks better the language of our beloved product.
Insights
Fortunately, Robomow was at the time (and is Today), a well established brand and had quite a bit of useful consumer insights. We were able to quickly detect the main pain-points for our current users as well as the primary gaps between the current App and our products.
After prioritizing the pain-points and understanding how to solve the gaps, we landed on the following objectives:
– Making it easier for the user to command the robotic lawn mower
– Simplify the “Weekly Schedule” feature
– Updating the UI so it speaks the same language as our look and feel
– Customers like to humanize their robots by giving them names and pasting stickers, we can enhance that aspect
The solution
We went to the board and started building the user scenarios with our objectives in mind. Those scenarios led us to wireframes based on our hypothesis and those wireframes led us to the mockups. To test the mockups we carefully choose our testers, we needed from one side people that understood that this is a mockup, in the other side, in order to cover the extreme cases also, we needed users that were inexperienced with the product.
The first objective I tackled was giving the user the possibility to quickly send its mower to lawn the garden, either the inner garden or the edges, send the mower home if it was mowing already and finally, give the user the possibility to remote control the mower (That’s right, like the toy cars 🙂 ).
In addition, I gave the user all the information he/she needed to plan his day in the garden at glance, when is the robot departing to mow again, which zone of the garden it is going to mow and how much time until the lawn is completed.
In regards to the weekly schedule, I used toggle switches to activate or deactivate the days in which the mower will work. This, while using native time-pickers to choose in which ours it can mow.
This way, the user will have a clear picture at glance of when in the week the garden is free as well as easily removing or adding time periods.
To enhance the humanization of the robotic lawn mower, I literally, gave it a beating heart 🙂
